RATES FOR EVERYTHING ELSE
THINGS THAT ARE NOT CLASSICAL MUSIC LOCATION RECORDINGS

Indie Films and other Creative Projects
  • starts at $500 per shoot HALF day
Contact Me to discuss your goals.
I love these creative projects, and tend to spend a disproportionate amount of time on them vs. the more cookie-cutter options offered above. If you are interested in collaborating on an Indie Film, small-budget Commercial, or other creative project involving music, sound, light, photos, or video, let's discuss what you have in mind. I can often make projects work for $500-$1,000, but they need to have an understanding of the what is involved and what is realistic.
EDITING & ALL OTHER THINGS
$44/HR
I provide full color and sound processing (details below). So, you get everything, fully processed, from every angle. Full sound, full color, full quality.
I just don’t cut between cameras or add titles except working hourly. If you want this to but cut professionally, you have to pay me for that time. It's optional and I do not offer it for free for ANY package by default.
My hourly editing rate is: $44/hr
  • Best estimate for editing is 6-9 hours per 1 finished hour (PFH) of material, or:
  • $264-$396 per hour of concert music**
  • Estimates aren't guarantees.
  • The work is hourly and that is non-negotiable.
No grant application, competition, or university program has ever required this level of professional editing, EVER.

In fact, many discourage it or prefer a single, unedited take from a single camera/angle.
It is a druthers/luxury item for most, and it is not a cost-effective one to hire someone else to do for most. It's just too time consuming and expensive if you charge for that time.
You can also take this footage to your editor of choice

-OR-
Edit the footage yourself for FREE.

For help with the latter, I offer video and in-person training for free. To repeat, I will train you to edit, for free.

It will take less than an hour, but you have to pay attention and do some homework of your own.
**Please note**
The editing involved for films, sizzle reels, and other projects is greater than for simple concert edits.
HEADSHOTS
Unlimited looks, shoot for up to 3 hours. 3 retouches.
Please bring a helper if you can. I need a grip for these days.
$333 FLAT

Photo/Video Event Coverage/Journalism
(for events without music)
You would like for me to come and cover/capture an event that is not a performance (audio/video). If it’s a performance, please refer to the rates above.
$324 FLAT
WEDDINGS
  • $975 for covering 3 separate events
  1. Photos during the actual wedding ceremony;
  2. Dedicated photos after the ceremony with the entire party/family; and,
  3. The reception.
Additional covereage, like an earlier Engagement/Announcement session, or coverage of the rehearsal dinner, is only $200 per item.
Retouches and admin processing beyond what is offered in a standard headshot/photography packages are billed at the same $44/hr for all additional services not included in each package.
SOMETHING NOT LISTED / EVERYTHING ELSE
(probably $44/hr)
Please Contact Me to discuss your goals, however.
Some things are simpler/cheaper than you might think.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OTHER COMMON CONSIDERATIONS AND COSTS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adding a 3rd Camera is $100 more. Each additional camera is $100.
You get 2 camera angles with most packages (unless stated otherwise above).
So, if the $500 package has 2 cameras (it does) and you would like 3, the cost for the day/shoot is now $600. You will get the same audio+video sync for all camera angles  (whether it's 1 or 5 cameras).
If you need more than five (5) cameras, I will need to rent more and that increases the budget.
Lighting
Offered when appropriate and time allows. The additional cost is $125 unless it is included by default with a package above, like it is with audition videos. Please allow additional time for setup and breakdown of lights.
Recording Venue Options
Your own Recital Hall/etc.
I'll record anywhere. The better the acoustic, the better the acoustic. Your living room absolutely sucks. Thayer Hall is wonderful. Most venues are somewhere in between.
Acoustic Performances (Church Sanctuary)
$125, one-time Donation to the Church of the Lighted Window in La Canada, CA.
Most clients secure their own recording location and we come to them. If you do not have a suitable acoustic environment in which to record, La Canada Congregational Church, where I am the bass section leader, currently permits their sanctuary to be used for recordings of classical music. The church asks a modest $100 flat rental fee for the duration of the session.
Recording Venue - Home Studio
Treated ISO Sound Both (Flat project or hourly rate, depending)
No additional Charge for use of my home studio.

I also have a sound treated recording booth suitable for audiobook narration, voice acting, and studio style recording / multi-tracking. Recordings made in living rooms or other non-treated environments often have undesirable attributes that are either difficult or impossible to remove during post-production without noticeable artefacts. I do not charge extra for recordings made my studio. It’s a little Bohemian looking, but the quality is uncompromised.
Recording Venue - Full Size Studio (Contact Vendor)
https://www.yorkrecording.com/
For bands and singer/song-writers wishing to create full-on Studio albums, I refer folks to Amador Solis at York Recording in Eagle Rock. I can assist in the recording process, or they can take care of you entirely.
Accompanist – Piano or Organ ($80/hr)

If you require an accompanist (piano), one can be provided for you. Our accompanists charge    $80/hr during the session. Some pieces require advanced preparation due to the difficulty of the orchestral reduction. That preparation time is also billed at the same hourly rate. All accompanists have either a Doctor of Music Arts (DMA) in piano performance or collaborative keyboard arts from a major music program/university, or equivalent credentials, and are well established professionals in the highly competitive Los Angeles classical music scene. Performers should provide their music to the accompanist no less than one week in advance of the session. Accompanists may be included in the video or not, depending on the preference of the performer.

Larger Crew / Additional Personnel
Subject to availability. Rate depends on the level of skill of the additional crew members/capacity. Helps to speed up setup and breakdown, but not necessarily the event itself. Experienced Camera operators have higher fees. Less experienced camera operators are available but add some degree of risk to the project.
Most gigs are between 4 and 5 hours including setup/breakdown and bill between 3 and 4 hours for additional crew,

Additional personnel is not required for most projects, but they help to speed up setup and load-out times considerably. They also help with more complicated projects. Sometimes, you just need another person/set of hands, and the performers should not be the ones responsible for any production-related activities.

Additional crew is A REQUIRED UPGRADE if I tell you on the phone that the time you are budgeting for the setup and breakdown is insufficient.
Stabilization
I offer no less than nine (9) different kinds of stabilization, depending on the nature of the project. People take stabilization for granted, because phones and other devices incorporate it without you even knowing. Professional videography requires some amount of physical or post-production stabilization, if the camera will move during the shot, and you want all or most of that movement to be of acceptable video quality.
Professional Stabilization (Slow, large footprint, best results)
  • Fluid Head Tripods - For fixed camera positions for extended shoots. Default mount.
  • Glidecam HD4000 with Vest - This option works uses counterweights to create very smooth 3-axis stabilization. Not requiring batteries or motors, and having the vest, allows this to be used for longer shoots. However, its visual footprint is the most significant.
  • DJI Ronin 4 Pro Motorized Gimbal - This is the most common option in professional indie film production. Motorized gimbals allow for the most advanced control of a stabilized camera.
Gyroscopic Stabilization during Post-Production
  • Prosumer/Hybrid options offer improvements over no stabilization at all, but for video (not for stills), gyroscopic sensor data is recorded. This data is then interpreted by GyroFlow and DaVinci Resolve for the best post-production option for stabilization.
Indie Production Stabilization (Fast, small foorprint, compatible with pro workflow)
  • Cinematographer's Saddle - Handheld cinematography can get great angles but tends to be unusably shaky. This helps to reduce "microjitters" and other grip problems pure handheld can introduce.
  • Monopod - Weddings and other run n gun when mobility between video takes is important, but also, the camera will not be moving much during capture. Also helps with fatigue on longer shoot days.
Prosumer / Hybrid / Lens and Body Stabilization Options
  • In-Body, Image Stabilization ("IBIS") - Hybrid Professional Stills/Video cameras, like the r5mkii offer in-body, 5-axis, sensor-stabilization. This stabilization is much better than without, especially if a lens does not have stabilization. It is not, however, compatible with gyro stabilization. Best for quick turnaround.
  • Lens Stabilization - Some Hybrid Professional Stills/Video lenses offer image stabilization from the lens, itself. This lens stabilization can be paried with IBIS for up to 8.5 stops of stabilization, in-camera.
  • In-Body Digital/Optical Stabilization - is also offered on all Canon video-capable cameras. When used with Lens Stabilization and IBIS, some digital IS applied in-camera can further smooth motion.
High Resolution (6K, 8K) and Cinema Raw Workflow
By default, projects are offered in very high quality 4K/UHD format, recorded in 10-bit color, CLOG 2 Cinema Gamut. This offers high dynamic range and is suitable for all projects, including those created for Netflix (and comparable streaming platforms).
For additional cost, projects can be recorded in 6K or 8K, 12-bit raw. Raw footage offers some advantages over the 10-bit XF-AVC, and XF-AVC S files that are recorded to by default. Raw footage also takes up more storage space and requires more post-production. It adds to the cost and does not necessarily add to the quality, unless heavy editing, or other specific considerations apply to the project.
Equipment Rental
Most budgets for professional productions have a rental budget. Most legit directors and DPs don't even own their own gear or use it on real projects. Please bear that in mind. You're getting all of this, included.
If I need to rent something, (or you would prefer for me to use something other than what I have to film your project), you will be responsible for the costs of the rental, including my travel/time for the rental.

If I need to rent something, it's because I need to rent it to make your project better in a very specific way and this the only or best way to accomplish that.
